Sofia & James
Two people, a registrar, and eleven kilometres of snow between the car and the vows.
An elopement is a logistics problem wearing a dress. We left at four, walked in head torches for two hours, and reached the saddle with twenty minutes of usable light to spare.
Before anyone else was awake
The cold does something to the colour that no filter reproduces: everything goes blue until the sun clears the ridge, and then for about four minutes it is gold.
Nobody clapped. The silence was better.James
Coming down
They read their own vows twice: once for the registrar, once properly, with nobody writing anything down.
What it costs to get there
Eleven kilometres, two hours in the dark, and a registrar who walks faster than either of them. Everything in the bag has to earn its weight at that hour.
We were back at the refuge by one, eating soup, boots steaming by the fire. There is no reception in this gallery because there wasn’t one.
